Kids Smoothies: Book Review and Giveaway

This Giveaway is Now Closed

I’ve been following Super Healthy Kids for some time now. Amy and Natalie just keep the healthy meal ideas coming. When I found out Amy was coming out with a book, I was all over it. She kindly sent me a complementary book to review and give away!

201 Healthy Smoothies & Juices for Kids: Fresh, Wholesome, No-Sugar-Added Drinks Your Child Will Love comes at good time for me. We’ve been making smoothies for a while now and are admittedly in a rut. It’s also summer and the perfect time to experiment with smoothies and fresh juices.

The book is chock-full of recipes for kids smoothies and juices with a huge variety of fruits and vegetables. And they are really good. I only have a regular blender which works fine for most of the recipes, but some call for a high-powered blender. Also, the juice recipes require a juicer, which I don’t have (yet).

I like smoothies because they are a totally different (and tasty) way for children to experience fresh produce. It’s also nice to whip one up with produce that is looking kind of sickly but is still good to eat. Don’t sneak in the good stuff without your child knowing though. Have them help you make it so they are aware of the healthy items that go into it!

I had Big A help me and she gives a thumbs up or down for the final results. We have some good ones she likes, a couple for me and even one for Little D. He’s not big on “fruit sweet” but was all over the Banana Split Smoothie which has cocoa.

015

Mango Madness was one of our favorites:

Makes 4, 1 cup servings:

1/2 cup dandelion greens
1/2 cup romaine lettuce
2 mangoes, peeled and pit removed
1 banana peeled
a handful of ice or choose a frozen banana (optional but makes it more slushy)
1/2 cup water

Directions: add the first 5 ingredients and 1/4 cup water in a blender for about 30 seconds pushing food into blades if necessary. Add the remaining 1/4 cup water until it reaches the desired consistency.

In addition to the recipes, there are plenty of tips and fun facts about nutrition throughout the book. Overall, this a must-have book for parents wanting to experiment with kids smoothies and juices.

Below is what you need to do to enter the giveaway. Jill is also giving away the book on her site so head over there for more chances to win!

1) Mandatory entry: Leave a comment telling me why you would like to win a copy of this book.

2) For an additional entry, like Fearless Feeding on Facebook. If you already like us or don’t have a Facebook account, tell at least one friend. Leave another comment saying what you did.

3) for a 4th entry, like Super Healthy Kids on Facebook. Remember to leave a comment for each thing you do!

4) For a third entry, tweet, pin or share this post on Facebook.

One winner will be chose using random.org. This giveaway will end Friday July 20th at the stroke of midnight. Good luck!

Thank you for the post and this opportunity!

My one year old is living off smoothies lately! I was fortunate enough to be able to breast feed her w/o supplementation until this point. When we both were ready for weaning she did good for about 3 days and the suddently went, and still is, on a total drinking strike!! She laughs and bats away any sippee or straw or cup offered to her (milk, water, juice, breast milk, etc). The only thing I can be sure of is smoothies, so, a variety of recipe suggestions would be amazing!

    Thanks again!

I would absolutely enjoy having this book of recipes for my 2 year old daughter and even my friends kids. My family is vegetarian, but my daughter is a picky eater and will only eat carrots as a vegetable. I have tried to juice veggies to get her to get some nutrients from them, but she will never drink them. It would be wonderful to finally find something she likes and is healthy. I might add that my husband and I would definetly use these recipes for ourselfs as well 🙂

I am a pediatric registered dietitian, and I would love this book to help all the little kiddos that I work with! Not only do I work in school nutrition, but I also speak with parents and families at various pediatric practices for developmentally delayed and/or picky eating children who are at a nutritional risk. Parents are always asking how to get their kids to enjoy more fruits & veggies!

My kids constantly ask for me to make them a smoothie when I make my protein smoothies (I cannot share my protein as it’s too much for their little bodies to handle). This would provide me with the recipes that i need to create them smoothies 🙂

I’m also a follower of Super Healthy Kids in addition to your blog – we Amys have to stick together! – and I would love to win this book because while my daughter and I love smoothies, I’m not that creative when it comes to combos. Blueberries and spinach is our usual. Some additional inspiration would be great!

I would love a copy of this book to climb out of our smoothie rut and mainly because my youngest has texture issues with food, but if the challenging food (like spinach) is blended in a smoothie…he gobbles it down! I love sending the kids off to school with a smoothie for breakfast and would love some inspiration for new ideas.
